A quick guide to the types of engraving materials

The majority of the engraved labels we produce are on engraving laminate. We have two main types, one for indoor and one for outdoor use.

Indoor engraving laminate

Indoor Traffolyte type engraving laminates come in 1.5mm and 3mm thicknesses. This laminate comprises a minimum of three layers of material. In the engraving process, the top layer is scraped away to reveal the colour underneath. For signs requiring more than one colour, laminates with more layers are used. The engraving process allows for the tool depth to be altered revealing the different colours.

This laminate comes in a range of colours. Brushed metal effects are available. These are ideal as a cheaper alternative to engraved stainless steel or brass.

Holes can be added as part of the manufacturing process or they can be supplied with self-adhesive backing. We supply ball chains and connectors as a possible fixing method for these engraved tags.

External engraving laminates

External engraving laminate is less rigid than internal laminate. It is generally made from two layers. Again, the top layer is scratched away to reveal the colour underneath.  These signs can be also be supplied with fixing holes. If these signs are to be stuck on we would recommend an outdoor contact adhesive be used.

Other engraving materials

Metals such as stainless steel and brass can also be engraved. Once engraved the lettering can be infilled to make the lettering stand out. Metal signs are ideal for finished buildings, placques, and long-term outdoor use.
